Sal or Boa Vista: which Cape Verde island should you choose?

Do not choose only by the photograph. Choose by how you want your days to unfold.

The decision

Both islands can be right — for different people.

Think about your pace.

Do you want dinners out, excursions and some life around you? Or do you picture a week shaped almost entirely around the beach and rest?

Decision guide · reviewed on 5 September 2026

The hotel’s location matters as much as the island.

Sal and Boa Vista both offer beach holidays, but the experience changes with the area you choose. On Sal, staying in Santa Maria can make it easier to walk to restaurants and outings. A remote resort requires a different plan. On Boa Vista, compare being close to Sal Rei with staying around a more isolated beach. “Sal has more activity” and “Boa Vista is peaceful” are starting points, not descriptions of every hotel.

Sal or Boa Vista: criteria for choosing
What you valueSalBoa Vista
Leaving the hotelConsider Santa Maria and confirm the walking distance to the centre.Consider Sal Rei; for more remote resorts, include transport in the budget.
Beach and restCompare the beach in front of the hotel, access and pool alternatives.Compare the length of the beach, exposure to wind and resort access.
ActivitiesPedra de Lume salt flats, outings and water activities can complement the stay.Dune landscapes and island outings can alternate with beach days.
FamiliesChoose based on the room, accepted age for the kids’ club, pool, food and transfer length. The island does not replace this comparison.
Swimming in the seaThe Atlantic has wind, waves and currents. Follow local signs; a photograph does not guarantee safe swimming conditions.
PriceCompare the same week, airport, number of nights, occupancy and meal plan. A lower price on another date does not prove that one island is always cheaper.

When to choose Sal

Put Sal first if you want to combine the beach with outings around Santa Maria. Before choosing, check the actual route between the hotel, centre and beach: “close to Santa Maria” may still require transport. For wind sports, confirm which beach the operator uses, the level required and whether the activity suits someone who only wants to swim.

The Cape Verde tourism portal dedicated to Sal presents the international airport, salt flats and water activities. Use these points to select one or two outings that interest you, leaving free time during the rest of the week.

When to choose Boa Vista

Boa Vista deserves consideration if you picture a stay mostly between resort and beach, with a few organised outings. Choosing accommodation near Sal Rei or an isolated resort changes your freedom to eat out and shop. Ask for the transfer duration and type, and confirm whether there is regular transport or whether you will need a taxi.

For dune or off-road vehicle outings, ask for information about the operator, participation conditions and protection of natural areas. Do not choose activities simply because they appear in an advert as included: confirm that they are part of the proposal and suitable for the group’s ages.

Which is better with children?

Start with the family’s needs: a room with suitable beds, distance to the restaurant, shade, a children’s pool and flexible meals. Confirm kids’ club age limits and whether supervision is included. If the sea is rough, the pool and hotel activities become more important. That is why it is useful to compare two specific hotels before deciding between two islands.

One week: how to distribute the time

One possible plan for seven nights is to reserve the first days for rest, choose a half-day outing and keep the remaining days flexible. If you want to see both islands, ask first about the connection and total cost between them. Do not assume that a combined trip is as simple as changing hotels on the same island.
