Albania: Adriatic or Ionian Riviera?

Before looking for a hotel, separate two experiences that are often mixed together. The official tourism portal places Golem about 10 km south of Durrës, on the Adriatic coast, with fine sand and shallow water. The same authority presents the Albanian Riviera as a route between Vlora and Saranda/Ksamil, beside the Ionian Sea, with mountains, bays and coastal villages. Golem is a practical beach base; Himarë, Dhërmi and the south require more road time and a willingness to explore.

Which coast fits your trip?
CriterionGolem / DurrësIonian Riviera
BeachSand and a gentle entry into the water, a combination described as suitable for families.Bays, coves and beaches with a more mountainous setting; check access and the type of surface.
PaceOne base with restaurants, bars and seaside walks.Successive stops, coastal roads and more time for viewpoints and villages.
LogisticsFewer hotel changes if you mainly want the sea.More transfers or a car, with closer attention to travel times between bases.

The month changes the decision

For a beach trip, check sea conditions, exposure to wind and which services are open on your chosen dates. In the height of summer, a base with easy access to the sand may be more valuable than a distant view; outside that season, a short route through towns and heritage sites can give the days more content. Do not choose “the Riviera” as if it were one resort: the exact location changes beach access and driving time.

Planning example (not a package): for seven nights, I would start with three nights in Golem for the beach and Durrës, followed by four nights in Himarë to explore the Ionian coast. This is an organising idea, not a bookable proposal: transfer times, transport and availability must be quoted. If the priority is relaxing with children, I would keep one base; if it is exploring, I would accept a hotel change.

What does it cost and is there a published offer?

At the catalogue check on 5 September 2026, there is no active offer for Albania. I do not present an average price because the total depends on the airport, season, type of transport, hotel category and number of bases. You can see current offers and read the guide to travelling in November to compare other possibilities, or send a quote request with the route you have in mind.

What to ask for in a proposal

Say whether you want sand and shallow water or bays and road trips, whether you accept driving, how many accommodation changes you can handle and whether you prefer to stay near a town. Always ask for the actual distance to the beach, parking, transfers and what is included in excursions. These answers give a more useful comparison than a simple hotel list.

Official sources consulted: Albanian National Tourism Agency — Golem and Albanian National Tourism Agency — Riviera. Beaches, opening times, transport and availability must be confirmed for the chosen dates.
