Cuba holidays: combining city and beach

A trip full of music, colour and one important choice: how much time do you want to give the city and how much to the beach?

Before choosing the resort

Cuba begins long before the sand.

Havana changes the pace of the trip.

For some people it is the centre of the experience; for others, it is a short stop before switching off by the sea. The right plan depends on that balance.

Decision guide · reviewed on 5 September 2026

Havana and Varadero offer two different trips within Cuba.

Havana calls for days of city life, architecture, music and history. Varadero concentrates on beach and rest. The official Cuba Travel portal presents them as different hubs and confirms that Varadero is about 140 km from Havana, roughly two hours by road. That proximity makes a combination possible, but the transfer still takes part of a day and must be included in the budget.

ExperienceUrban pace, heritage, restaurants and cultural life.Beach, sea and a stay centred around the resort.
FlexibilityMore freedom to choose where to eat and what to visit.Confirm the meal plan and activities; the hotel may account for much of your spending.
LogisticsA good base to start, but with journeys within the city.Transfer from Havana or the airport and fewer changes during the beach days.
BudgetHotel, meals, visits and transport may appear separately.A rate with meals can make the total easier to follow, but check everything excluded.

The month matters too

In its official FAQs, Cuba Travel divides the year between a less rainy period from November to April and a rainy period from May to October. The Havana page identifies September and October as the city's wettest months. This helps with choosing a travel window, but it does not replace the forecast for the destination and specific days. If you travel in the wetter period, leave room to move an outdoor visit.

A combination may be worth the transfer

Planning example (not a package): for ten nights, I would start with three nights in Havana and finish with seven in Varadero. This puts the cultural part first and the final days aside for rest, but it is only an organising idea; transport, arrival time and availability must be confirmed. If the trip is short, I would choose one hub so that the holiday does not become a series of changes.

Is there a published Cuba offer?

At the catalogue check on 5 September 2026, there is no active offer for Cuba. I do not present an indicative price: the total depends on flights, season, hotel, meal plan, transfer and activities. You can see the current catalogue or send a quote request with the month, number of nights and the balance you want between Havana and the beach.

What should appear in the proposal?

Ask for the accommodation location, the type of transfer between Havana and Varadero, meal plan, optional excursions and free time. If culture is the priority, confirm that there is enough time in the city; if rest is the priority, avoid adding journeys just to fill the itinerary. The proposal should show what is included and what you will pay at the destination.

Official sources consulted: Cuba Travel — official portal, Cuba Travel — Varadero, Cuba Travel — Havana and Cuba Travel — FAQs and climate. Entry conditions, transport and availability must be confirmed before booking.
