Greece holidays: Santorini, Crete and more

Santorini, Mykonos, Crete, Rhodes and Corfu are not the same Greece. The island and the season change the pace and how busy it feels.

Before choosing the island

A photo of Santorini does not choose your holiday.

The first decision is the type of island.

Some people want a caldera and sunset. Others want a long beach, a family stay and a car. Crete and Rhodes widen the options; Corfu brings different greenery and a different winter.

The right Greek island depends on size, season and the kind of days you want.

Santorini and Mykonos are compact and very busy in summer. Crete is almost a small continent: beach, gorges and a car. Rhodes has a longer season in the Dodecanese. Corfu, in the Ionian, is greener; the HNMS Kerkyra station (1955–2010) shows December around 190 mm and July almost dry. On Crete the Heraklion station has July and August mean maxima near 29 ºC and residual rain. Visit Greece presents the archipelago as very different coasts.

Which kind of island?
IslandChoose this if…Limit
SantoriniYou want a caldera, villages and the view.Little space; high summer demand.
MykonosYou want a beach and nightlife. The island’s energy is not Crete’s.
CreteYou want a car, a long beach and more space.A short week does not cover the whole island.
RhodesYou want a large Dodecanese island.Confirm the coast (east is usually more sheltered).
CorfuYou want more green and another exposure.Corfu in winter is rainy.

Santorini is walked, on the caldera: a car helps little. Crete and Rhodes need a car if you want beach and inland on the same day. Corfu does not replace the Aegean in winter: Kerkyra is much wetter in that season. Santorini and Mykonos have their own airports; Crete has more than one. One island per week; a second only with the ferry or domestic flight in writing — lost half-days are not “seeing Greece”.

Who it is for — and who it is not

Families who need space and beach look first at Crete or Rhodes. Anyone coming for the view accepts small, busy Santorini. Mykonos is beach and nightlife, not only a white village. It is the wrong trip if you want to “see Greece” in seven nights: two compact islands in the same week are tiring.

Planning example (not a package): seven nights on a single island. With twelve nights, Crete pays off more than jumping between Santorini and Mykonos. May, June, September and October ease the crowds. Give your preferred departure airport.

What should appear in the proposal

  • Island and area (“Greece” is not enough).
  • Transfers, ferry or domestic flight if there is a second island.
  • Month: July and August are the peak; May, June, September and October ease the crowds.
  • Whether you are travelling as a family and whether you will accept a small, busy island.
  • Whether you want a car (Crete, Rhodes) or a walkable plan (Santorini).
