Azores: which island should you choose?

São Miguel concentrates lakes and services. Terceira brings history. Pico and Faial mean crossing the channel. Flores is another logistics puzzle. The weather is unsettled on all of them.

The right question

One island with margin, or a hop between two?

Moving between islands only works with enough nights.

For a first visit, São Miguel usually simplifies things. Pico and Faial make a pair if the sea allows. Flores needs more connection time.

Azores: which island — São Miguel, Terceira, Pico or Flores.

Unsettled weather is common to all of them. The difference is what you do when the sky opens. São Miguel solves a first visit. Terceira shifts the tone towards history. Pico and Faial only pay off if you accept the sea as part of the plan. Flores needs more aircraft or ferry time. The Ponta Delgada 1991–2020 data show mild summers (August mean maximum 26.0 ºC) and wet winters — not a tropical beach climate.

Who each island is for

São Miguel is for a first visit: lakes, Furnas, more connections and more services. Terceira is for anyone who already knows São Miguel or wants history and Angra. Pico and Faial mean crossing the channel — vines and a natural pair, if the weather allows. Flores is for anyone with spare nights who wants the more remote west.

It is not a tropical beach: in Ponta Delgada, July is the driest month (26 mm), not a month without rain. Do not jump three islands in a week. Ten nights cover São Miguel and a Pico–Faial pair, with a spare day if the channel closes. Pack a waterproof in every month.

Planning example (not a package): seven nights on São Miguel with a car. Ten nights: six on São Miguel and four on Faial/Pico, with a spare day if the channel closes. Avoid three islands in a week.

What should appear in the proposal

  • Base island and nights — one, or a Pico–Faial pair, not three jumps in a week.
  • Car and flights or ferries in writing.
  • Month and a plan B for trails if the sky closes.
  • Whether it is a first visit (São Miguel usually simplifies) or you already know that island.
  • Whether you accept the sea as part of the plan, in the case of Pico and Faial.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best Azores island?

The one that matches your programme. São Miguel wins on simplicity. Flores wins on isolation, with another cost in time.

Is July dry?

In Ponta Delgada it is the driest month, not a month without rain. Pack a waterproof.

Do I need a car on São Miguel?

It helps. Lakes and Furnas are not at the hotel door. Occasional transfers work; a car gives you a plan B when the sky changes.

Pico and Faial on the same trip?

Yes, if the sea allows and the connections are in writing. They are the most natural pair. Allow a spare day if the channel closes.

Flores on a first visit?

Only with extra nights. The logistics are different. For a first time, São Miguel usually suffices; Flores is for anyone who already accepts the remote west.
