In Mauritius, the month and the coast matter more than the island’s name.
The Mauritius Meteorological Services describe a mild tropical maritime climate, with a humid summer from November to April and a relatively cool dry winter from June to September (May and October are transition months). Mean summer temperature is 24.7 ºC and mean winter temperature 20.4 ºC. The warmest months are January and February (mean daytime maximum 29.2 ºC); July and August have mean night minima of 16.4 ºC. The official cyclone season runs from 1 November to 15 May. In the west, the Medine station shows summers far wetter than July–September.
| If you value | Southern summer | Southern winter |
|---|---|---|
| Water and warmth | Warmer; more rain (even in the west, the driest coast). | Cooler; less rain in the west. |
| Cyclones | You are inside the official season. | Outside the official season; a cyclone is rare but not impossible. |
| Coast | Ask for the actual beach: the service publishes climatology for west, north, east, south and the plateau. | |
West and north are usually more sheltered from the south-east trades in the southern winter; east and south catch more wind in that season. The plateau is another altitude, not a beach. Ask for the coast by name (west, north, east or south), not “a hotel on the island”. Seven nights on one coast avoid unnecessary loops.
Who it is for — and who it is not
Mauritius works if you want an Indian Ocean island with a hotel, a beach and a chosen coast. The west (Medine station) is the driest coast — in summer it rains more across the island, including there. In the southern winter, the south-east trades leave west and north more sheltered.
They are not the Maldives (atolls, another island rhythm) nor Zanzibar (another culture and another logistics). January is southern summer: heat, humidity and cyclone season (1 November to 15 May). Anyone who will not accept any cyclone risk should aim for June–September. Seven nights on one coast, with the transfer in writing, pay off more than two loops around the island.
Planning example (not a package): seven nights on a single coast, with the transfer in writing. Compare with the Maldives and Zanzibar by island type. Give your preferred departure airport.
What should appear in the proposal
- A concrete coast and hotel (west, north, east, south or plateau — not “the island”).
- Transfer in writing and meal plan.
- Month: southern summer (November–April) or drier winter (June–September).
- Whether cyclone risk (1 November to 15 May) is negotiable, and change conditions if a warning is issued.
- Whether you prefer a coast more sheltered from the south-east trades.
