Best time to visit Mauritius: southern summer, cyclones and coast.
Summer (November–April) is warmer and holds two thirds of annual rainfall in the island’s 1971–2000 mean. Winter (June–September) is cooler. Cyclone season is officially 1 November to 15 May: that does not mean a cyclone every week; it means the warning system is active. In the west, the Medine station has February around 182 mm and September around 13 mm (1971–2000).
| Window | Climate (MMS) | Coast |
|---|---|---|
| January and February | Warmest; summer rain in the west. | Ask for the hotel beach, not “the island”. |
| June to September | Winter: drier in the west. | Slightly cooler water; less rain. |
| 1 Nov–15 May | Cyclone season. | Follow MMS warnings if you travel in this window. |
Who each window is for
June to September (southern winter) is for anyone who wants less rain in the west, slightly cooler water and to stay outside official cyclone season. January and February are for anyone who accepts the warmest months, summer rain even in the west, and an active warning system. January is southern summer: heat, humidity and cyclone season.
One coast only. In winter, west and north are usually more sheltered from the south-east trades. Compare with the Maldives and Zanzibar by island type.
Planning example (not a package): seven nights in September in the west, or seven in February if you accept heat, summer rain and cyclone season. One coast only.
What should appear in the proposal
- Month: drier southern winter (June–September) or warmer, wetter summer (November–April).
- A concrete coast; in winter the south-east trades leave west and north more sheltered.
- Transfer and meal plan.
- Change conditions if a cyclone warning is issued (official season 1 November to 15 May).
- Whether cyclone risk is negotiable.
Frequently asked questions
Can I go in January?
Yes, if you accept the humid summer and cyclone season. January is southern summer: heat, humidity and active warnings.
Which coast is “better”?
In the southern winter the trades blow from the south-east: west and north are usually more sheltered. MMS publishes five regions: compare them.
Is the west the wettest coast?
No. The west (Medine station) is the driest coast. In summer it rains more across the island, including in the west. July–September are much drier.
Does cyclone season stop the trip?
Not by itself. It runs from 1 November to 15 May. It means active warnings, not a cyclone every week. Ask for change conditions in the proposal.
September or February?
September: southern winter, less rain in the west. February: among the warmest months, with summer rain (about 182 mm at Medine) and cyclone season. Choose what you will accept.
