Bali holidays: Ubud, beaches and dry season

Ubud is inland and cultural. Seminyak, Uluwatu and Nusa Dua are different coasts. The dry season and the rains change the days.

Before choosing the area

Bali is not a single beach.

The first decision is inland or coast — and which coast.

Some people want rice terraces and temples in Ubud. Others want surf, sunset or a more organised resort. The island has several climate zones; the dry season does not start on the same day everywhere.

Decision guide · reviewed on 8 October 2026

Bali needs an area and a season: Ubud is not Nusa Dua.

Ubud is inland: rice terraces, temples, no beach. Seminyak has more nightlife. Uluwatu brings cliffs and surf. Nusa Dua is the planned, calmer resort area. Official Indonesian tourism describes that contrast. Bali’s BMKG climate station splits the island into 20 season zones: the dry season usually starts in April–May and the rains in October–November — not on the same day in Ubud and on the south coast.

Who it is for — and who it is not

Choose the area before you choose the month. Anyone who wants only sea should not sleep only in Ubud. Anyone who wants rice fields should not stay only in Nusa Dua. Nine nights cover one coast and a block in Ubud; four hotels in a week are spent in transfers. In a storm, a dawn transfer or a day on the cliffs gets harder: keep a plan B. Denpasar is tiring if the room is at the other end of the island on arrival.

It is not one beach with one calendar. It is not Thailand or Vietnam: the decision here is inland vs coast, and which coast. Anyone who will not accept the peak of the rains (December to March) should aim for April to September; October and November are a transition. The dry season does not start on the same day in all 20 BMKG zones.

Planning example (not a package): nine nights, five on one coast and three or four in Ubud. Arriving into Denpasar is tiring if the transfer is long at night. Give your preferred departure airport.

What should appear in the proposal

  • Area of each base (Ubud, Seminyak, Uluwatu, Nusa Dua or another).
  • Nights in each — avoid four hotels in a week.
  • Transfer from Denpasar, especially if you land at night.
  • Meal plan and exclusions.
  • Month: dry season, as a rule, April to September; rains November to March.
