Vietnam trips: north, centre and south

Hanoi, Hue/Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh do not share the same calendar. A circuit only works if the month serves all three regions.

Before you plan the route

North, centre and south are three climates.

The first decision is which regions fit the month.

Some people want Ha Long Bay and Hanoi. Others want Hoi An and the beach. The south is warm almost year-round, with a different rainy season. Fitting it all into a short week means many transfers.

North, centre and south Vietnam do not share the same calendar.

Hanoi and Ha Long Bay are the north. Hue, Hoi An and Da Nang are the centre. Ho Chi Minh is the south. Official tourism (Vietnam Tourism) points to March to May as the easiest window for the country. The north rains mainly from June to August; the south, from May to November — in summer the two seasons overlap. The centre (Hoi An, Hue, Da Nang) rains later: roughly September to January. In the north, December to March is cool to cold (lows that can fall to 10 ºC). In the south, December to April is drier, around 30 ºC for much of the year.

Which regions fit your month?

NorthYou want Hanoi and Ha Long.A cool winter; summer rains (June–August). Pack a jacket in December–March.
CentreYou want Hoi An, Hue and the beach.September to January are the rainy months, with occasional floods.
SouthYou want a warm city year-round.Afternoon rain from May to November; the dry window is December–April.

Who it is for — and who it is not

Vietnam works if you accept three climates and choose which fit the month. March to May is the compromise official tourism highlights for the whole country. In October, skipping the centre is usually the sensible call: north and south still overlap in summer rains, and Hoi An is at its peak. Families cope better with two hubs than Hanoi, Hoi An and the south in a week of transfers.

It is not a beach-only week. It is not Bali: the decision here is north, centre or south. Fitting Ha Long, Hoi An and the south into a short week means many transfers.

Planning example (not a package): ten nights in April, north and centre. In October, north and south, or only the south. No overnight buses if you are travelling as a family. Give your preferred departure airport. Compare with Thailand and Bali by trip type.

What should appear in the proposal

  • Regions and nights in each (north, centre, south).
  • Domestic links: flight, train or transfer — no overnight buses if you are travelling as a family.
  • Month: March–May is the window official tourism highlights for the country.
  • Whether you will skip the centre (Hue / Hoi An / Da Nang) from September to January.
  • Whether the priority is Ha Long, Hoi An and the beach, or a warm southern city.
