Best time to visit Vietnam: three climates, one month.
If your route combines Hanoi, Hoi An and the south, the month has to serve all three. Vietnam Tourism points to March–May as the easiest window for the country. The north rains mainly from June to August; the south, from May to November — in summer the two seasons overlap. The centre (Hoi An, Hue, Da Nang) rains later: roughly September to January. Hanoi: December–March cool to cold (lows that can fall to 10 ºC); September–November around 25 ºC. Ho Chi Minh: dry from December to April, afternoon rain from May to November, around 30 ºC for much of the year.
| Window | North | Centre | South |
|---|---|---|---|
| March to May | Warming up; Ha Long easier to visit. | The drier season in Hoi An. | Still dry, or the start of the rains (May). |
| September to November | A milder autumn in Hanoi. | Storms and floods: consider skipping. | Afternoon downpours. |
| December to February | Cool; a jacket in Hanoi. | Still wet at the start; drying later. | The driest window. |
Who each window is for
March to May is the compromise official tourism highlights for the country. December to February is for the driest south and a cool north — a jacket in Hanoi. September to November: skip the centre if you will not accept storms and floods. Twelve nights in April cover Hanoi, Ha Long, Hoi An and two days in the south. In October, two hubs. No overnight buses as a family.
Planning example (not a package): twelve nights in April: Hanoi, Ha Long, Hoi An and two days in the south. In October, two hubs, not three.
What should appear in the proposal
- Month: March–May is the window official tourism highlights for the country.
- Regions (north, centre, south) and nights in each — two hubs pay off more than three in a week.
- Domestic connections (flight or train), with no overnight buses as a family.
- Whether you will skip the centre from September to January (rain and floods in Hue and Hoi An).
- Slack in the programme: a tight circuit means many transfers.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best month for the whole of Vietnam?
March to May is the window official tourism highlights. No month is perfect in all three regions at once: north and south overlap in summer; the centre rains later.
Can I go in October?
Yes, if you accept the centre in storm season — or if you skip it. The south is in afternoon rains; Hanoi can be milder.
Is Hoi An in November a good idea?
September to January are the centre’s rainy months, with occasional floods. If Hoi An is non-negotiable, accept flexibility; otherwise skip the centre.
Is the south dry in July?
No. December to April is the driest southern window. May to November brings afternoon downpours; July overlaps with the north’s summer rains.
How long for north and centre?
Ten nights in April cover Hanoi, Ha Long and Hoi An without living in transfers. Three hubs in a short week do not. As a family, skip overnight buses.
