Mexico holidays: Cancun, Riviera Maya and Yucatan

Cancun and the Riviera Maya share the sea, but not the pace: hotel zone, town, cenotes and sargassum all shape the choice.

Before choosing the area

Cancun and the Riviera Maya are not the same trip.

The first decision is the kind of days you want.

Some people want a resort with little moving around. Others want cenotes, archaeological sites and dinners out. The right area depends on that — and on the month.

Cancun, Riviera Maya or inland Yucatan: choose the kind of days you want.

Cancun concentrates the hotel zone, flights and beach resorts. The Riviera Maya stretches south — Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, Akumal, Tulum — with more town life, more journeys and easier access to cenotes. Inland Yucatan (Valladolid, Mérida, Chichén Itzá) is a different trip: hot and humid (warm subhumid climate) with mostly summer rain, archaeological sites and little sea. Many proposals mix a beach stay with a day inland; that only works if you have enough nights.

FamiliesAll inclusive and hotel facilities usually simplify the stay.Compare the beach (sargassum, waves) and the distance to restaurants.Works as an add-on, not as the only base if swimming is the priority.
SargassumCaribbean-facing beaches: check recent conditions. The same on the open coast; inland cenotes and lagoons do not depend on seaweed.Less relevant; the limits are heat and travel time.

The month matters as much as the area.

The CONAGUA Cancun station (1991–2020 normals) shows warm days year-round: in December the mean maximum is about 29 ºC and the mean minimum about 21 ºC; in January the mean maximum stays near 29 ºC. March and April are among the driest months in that series; October is the wettest. This frames the climate; it does not forecast your week. The Atlantic hurricane season (June to November) also covers this coast: follow the forecast and the booking conditions.

Sargassum on the Quintana Roo coast is tracked in SEMAR bulletins. How much seaweed sits on your hotel beach still changes from day to day. If swimming in the sea is non-negotiable, ask about the specific beach and about alternatives (another stretch of coast, the pool, a cenote).

Planning example (not a package): for eight nights as a family, I would keep a single base in Cancun’s hotel zone or in Puerto Morelos, with one cenote day and, if energy allows, one archaeological visit. For ten or twelve nights I would compare seven beach nights and two or three inland, rather than changing hotels every other day. The order depends on the flight and on inland heat.

What should appear in the proposal

The exact area of the hotel, transfer, meal plan, room type and exclusions. If you want cenotes or Chichén Itzá, ask for them to be spelled out (duration, lunch, guide). Give ages, month and whether you will accept a more isolated resort or prefer to walk out to restaurants.
