Cancun or Riviera Maya: where to stay and when to go.
Cancun is the gateway: hotel zone, resorts in a line and a short transfer. The Riviera Maya is not one place — it is the coast south to Tulum, with Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen and Akumal along the way. For families who want all inclusive and little logistics, Cancun usually wins. For anyone who wants cenotes, dinners in town and a less “hotel strip” pace, the Riviera Maya is worth comparing. Sargassum and the month apply to both Caribbean-facing coasts.
| Criterion | Cancun | Riviera Maya |
|---|---|---|
| For families | Many resorts with entertainment and a full meal plan; the hotel zone is practical. | Family resorts exist, but check the distance to town and to a usable beach. |
| Leaving the hotel | More dependent on a transfer or taxi for the centre and for cenotes. | Playa del Carmen and Tulum make days out easier; Puerto Morelos is smaller and calmer. |
| Beach and sargassum | Open beaches; conditions change. Ask for an update on the hotel beach. | The same on the open coast. Cenotes and lagoons (such as Bacalar, further south) do not depend on seaweed. |
| Cancun in December | CONAGUA gives Cancun a December mean maximum of about 29 ºC and a mean minimum of about 21 ºC. Rain still appears in the series (December is not the driest month). Check the forecast. | |
When to go: warmth almost year-round, rain and sargassum varying.
In Cancun’s 1991–2020 series, March and April are among the driest months; October is the wettest. November still sees rain fairly often. The Atlantic hurricane season (June to November) covers this coast. Sargassum is tracked by SEMAR in bulletins: treat it as a beach condition, not a fixed season. December is popular because the air is warm and beach days are long — not because the Caribbean is “guaranteed clear”.
Planning example (not a package): for seven nights as a family I would choose Cancun hotel zone or Puerto Morelos, with one cenote day. For ten nights I would compare a Riviera base (Playa or Akumal) if you want more walking and a mix of ruins. I would avoid changing hotels mid-week on a short stay.
What should appear in the proposal
The area (not just “Mexico”), the transfer from Cancun, meal plan, room type and excursions. Say if you are travelling with children, whether the sea is non-negotiable and whether you will accept an isolated resort.
Frequently asked questions
Cancun or Riviera Maya: which is better?
There is no universal “better”. Cancun wins on resort simplicity. The Riviera Maya wins if you want towns, cenotes and more moving around. The hotel beach matters more than the region’s name.
Is Cancun in December a good idea?
The air is usually warm. Holiday demand is high. Rain and sargassum do not vanish: check the forecast and the beach.
Is Cancun all inclusive enough?
To switch off, yes, if the beach and hotel fit. If you want Maya sites, budget time and transport; do not assume they are “next door”.
Are cenotes affected by sargassum?
Cenotes are inland freshwater. Sargassum is a coastal phenomenon. You should still check operators and water safety.
