Maldives: all inclusive or half board?

In the Maldives, the meal plan changes the final price more than almost any other decision. Here is the honest comparison.

The decision

In the Maldives, nobody leaves the resort — and that changes the logic.

Think about your days.

On a resort island, there are no restaurants outside or supermarkets on the way to the beach. Almost everything you consume goes through the hotel — which is exactly why the meal plan deserves more attention than in other destinations.

Christmas and New Year

There's still time to think about Christmas.

Compare the supplement with what you expect to consume.

In the Maldives, choosing a meal plan also means deciding how to manage spending on an island. Half board may make sense if you take a leisurely breakfast, eat little at lunch and prefer to pay for drinks separately. All-inclusive deserves comparison when you want lunch every day, use the bars and know a larger share of the cost in advance. The name of the plan alone is not enough to decide.

What to confirm in each proposal
QuestionHalf boardAll-inclusive
MealsConfirm breakfast and dinner, the restaurants and the menus covered.Confirm lunch, snacks and any limits on à la carte meals.
DrinksThey may be charged separately; “Plus” plans may include a selection.Check brands, wine list, opening times and excluded drinks.
MinibarAsk for the price list and replenishment conditions.Do not assume it is included: check the products and replenishment frequency.
ActivitiesBudget for the excursions and equipment you plan to use.Confirm whether benefits exist and whether they depend on the length of stay.
TransfersThey are a separate budget line. The meal plan does not determine whether the transfer is included.

Two real examples show why you need to read the conditions.

Centara Grand Lagoon presents a “Plus” half-board plan with breakfast and dinner in designated venues. The Iru Kitchen & Bar at Cinnamon Velifushi distinguishes drinks available under all-inclusive plans from items that every guest pays for. These are examples of conditions published by the hotels themselves, checked in September 2026; they are not guaranteed inclusions in a proposal from Marta.

Read the Centara Grand Lagoon meal plan and the Iru Kitchen & Bar conditions. Before booking, compare the version valid for your dates, room category and fare.

A simple calculation for comparing the two options

Divide the total difference between the plans by the number of people and nights. The resulting per-person, per-night figure can then be compared with the lunches, drinks and other consumption you expect. Use the calculation as a comparison tool, not as a hotel price or travel quote.

Compare that amount with the lunches, drinks and other consumption you actually expect, using current menus with taxes included. If you plan to spend days on excursions, confirm whether you will use the resort meals. If you travel with children, calculate using their ages and the booking conditions: dividing the total in the same way for everyone can distort the comparison.

Speedboat, seaplane or domestic flight?

The cost and logistics of the transfer may matter more than the meal plan. Ask for the mode, baggage allowance, schedules compatible with international flights and additional costs. Seaplanes operate during the day; a late arrival may require another solution or an overnight stay. The official 2026 Maldives destination guide describes these connections. The proposal should confirm the exact route to your island.

What to send Marta

Share your dates, departure airport, number of nights, travellers’ ages, total budget and whether you prefer a beach villa or an overwater villa. Add your eating and drinking habits, interest in snorkelling and tolerance for connections. This allows the comparison to include the full cost of the stay, rather than ranking hotels only by their starting price.
