Best time for the Northeast: rain changes from coast to coast.
The air is warm for much of the year. What decides the month is rain on the coast you chose. On the east coast (Salvador, Maceió, Recife, João Pessoa and Natal) rain is concentrated, as a rule, between April and July. In Fortaleza, further north — and on the Jericoacoara and Lençóis Maranhenses coast — it falls mainly between February and May; September to November are the driest months. INMET (1991–2020) describes that contrast: in Fortaleza, March and April are the wettest months and October is among the driest.
| Coast | Wettest months (as a rule) | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Salvador | April to July. | Hotel area: city, urban beach, or both. |
| Recife / Porto de Galinhas | April to July, like Salvador. | Porto de Galinhas is about an hour from Recife; the climate is the coast’s. |
| Natal and Maceió | April to July, the same east-coast pattern. | The hotel beach, not a “Northeast” calendar. |
| Fortaleza | February to May; September to November among the driest. | If you continue to Jericoacoara, the month is the north coast’s. |
Who each coast is for
Salvador is for anyone who wants city and swimming in the same place. Recife / Porto de Galinhas is for a beach with a large city nearby. Natal and Maceió follow the same east-coast rain pattern: choose them for the beach, not for a different calendar. Fortaleza is the gateway to the north coast.
There is no single “best month for the Northeast”. Do not chain Salvador and Fortaleza in a week as if the rain were the same. Eight nights on one coast beat an airport circuit.
Planning example (not a package): eight nights in Salvador in August, or eight in Fortaleza in October. In December in Bahia, say whether you want the 24th or New Year.
What should appear in the proposal
- Base city, not “the Northeast”.
- Month, checked against the coast (east vs Fortaleza).
- Transfer and, from Recife, road time to Porto de Galinhas.
- Whether the hotel beach is non-negotiable.
- Ages and, in December, the 24th vs New Year.
Frequently asked questions
When does it rain in Salvador?
As a rule, between April and July. August to March is usually drier, without being a desert. Check the forecast for your week.
And in Recife?
The same east-coast pattern: rain concentrated, as a rule, from April to July. Porto de Galinhas follows that coast’s climate, not a separate calendar.
Is Fortaleza the same as Bahia?
No. In Fortaleza rain falls mainly from February to May; September to November are among the driest. That is the north-coast calendar, not Salvador’s.
Can I see five capitals in a week?
Not if you want a holiday. One base beats an airport circuit.
Salvador at Christmas: which dates?
The 24th and New Year are not the same week. Say which you want. The city of Natal is another base, in Rio Grande do Norte.
