Northeast Brazil holidays: Salvador and beaches

Salvador, Recife, Natal, Fortaleza and Maceio share the sea, but not the rain calendar or the pace of the city.

Before you choose the coast

The Northeast is not a single destination.

The first decision is the base city and the month.

Some people want heritage and city life in Salvador. Others want a resort beach near Recife, Natal, Fortaleza or Maceio. Rainfall changes from region to region.

Decision guide · reviewed on 8 October 2026

The Northeast is several coasts: choose the city before the month.

Salvador combines heritage, food and an urban beach. Recife links to the Porto de Galinhas coast, about an hour by road. Natal and Maceió are other east-coast bases. Fortaleza has a different rain calendar. Visit Brasil describes Salvador as tropical humid. On the east coast (Salvador, Maceió, Recife, João Pessoa and Natal) rain is concentrated, as a rule, between April and July. In Fortaleza, further north, it falls mainly between February and May; September to November are the driest months. INMET (1991–2020) describes that contrast: in Fortaleza, March and April are the wettest months and October is among the driest.

Which base city?

SalvadorYou want city, culture and sea on the same trip.Rain, as a rule, April to July.
Recife / Porto de GalinhasYou want a beach with a large city nearby. The same east-coast rain pattern; count the road time.
Natal and MaceióYou want a beach coast, on the same east-coast pattern.Do not treat them as Fortaleza.
FortalezaYou want the north coast, towards Jericoacoara.Rain, as a rule, February to May.

Who it is for — and who it is not

Salvador works if the city matters as much as swimming. Porto de Galinhas works if the hotel beach is the priority and you accept the transfer from Recife. Fortaleza and the north coast (Jericoacoara, Lençóis Maranhenses) are another geography: the dry month is not Bahia’s. Nine nights on one coast beat hopping capitals.

It is not generic “Brazil”: the Southeast, the Amazon and the South are other trips. There is also no single rain calendar for the whole region. If you travel in December, say whether you want the 24th in Salvador or New Year — the city of Natal is another base, in another state.

Planning example (not a package): nine nights on one coast. In August in Bahia or Pernambuco, the April–July rains have usually eased. In Fortaleza, September to November tend to be the driest months. Give your preferred departure airport — connections change from city to city.

What should appear in the proposal

  • Base city (Salvador, Recife/Porto de Galinhas, Natal, Fortaleza or Maceió — “Brazil” or “the Northeast” is not enough).
  • Hotel area and whether the hotel beach is non-negotiable.
  • Transfer and road time to the beach you actually chose.
  • Month, checked against the coast (east vs Fortaleza).
  • Whether you are travelling as a family and, in December, whether you want the 24th or New Year.
