Cairo, the Nile and the Red Sea need a balance — and a month that respects the heat.
A first trip to Egypt often mixes Cairo (pyramids, museum, city), a cruise between Luxor and Aswan, and a few days on the Red Sea (Hurghada or Sharm el-Sheikh). Those are three paces: urban, river and resort. Packing them into a short week turns the holiday into domestic airports. Egypt’s tourism ministry promotes the country on Experience Egypt; the practical order remains: how many nights you have and how much heat you will accept in Luxor.
| Block | It makes sense if… | Confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Cairo / Giza | You want the essential history at the start or end of the trip. | Enough nights not to rush the pyramids; transfers and tickets. |
| Nile cruise | You prefer temples in sequence, with the hotel moving with you. | Luxor–Aswan itinerary (or the reverse), real duration, included visits and the month because of heat. |
| Red Sea | You want to decompress with snorkelling, beach and a resort rhythm. | Which coast (Hurghada or Sinai), a domestic flight or transfer, and what the hotel includes. |
Winter eases the Nile; summer is far harder in Luxor than on the beach.
WMO 1961–1990 normals held at NCEI for Cairo, Luxor and Hurghada show the contrast: in January Cairo’s mean maximum is about 19 ºC and Luxor’s about 23 ºC, with cool nights; in July Luxor’s mean maximum exceeds 40 ºC, while Hurghada sits near 33 ºC. These are historical normals, not a forecast. They help explain why a Nile cruise is usually more comfortable in the cooler half of the year, and why a Red Sea resort copes better with summer.
Safety: read the official notices, not a blog summary.
Official travel advice changes and depends on your nationality. Check your own government's travel advice (for example the UK FCDO or the US State Department; Portuguese citizens can use the Portal das Comunidades). Several governments advise against all travel to some areas (including North Sinai and the strip along the Libya border) and against all but essential travel to others; classic circuits of Cairo, Luxor/Aswan and Red Sea coastal resorts usually sit outside those restricted zones — confirm the live official page before you book.
Planning example (not a package): with ten nights in the cooler half of the year, I would start with two nights in Cairo, three or four on a Nile cruise and four on the Red Sea, with domestic flights confirmed. With seven nights I would choose Cairo + Nile or Cairo + beach, so two days are not spent in transit. In summer I would cut time outdoors in Luxor or lean the trip towards the coast.
What should appear in the proposal
Nights in each hub, domestic flights, cruise type, included visits, visa if applicable, and what you pay at the destination. Ask for a written itinerary, not just the name “Egypt”. Give the month, the pace (more culture or more beach) and whether you are travelling with children.
