Best time to visit Egypt: Nile, Red Sea and official travel advice.
The “when to go” question in Egypt is really two: when Luxor’s heat is bearable for outdoor temples, and when you want the sea. Hurghada in December can be a beach with mild air; the same month in Upper Egypt is the classic window for a Nile cruise. Summer reverses the logic: the coast copes better than Luxor above 40 ºC in the shade, according to the historical normals.
| Place | January | July | How to read it for the trip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cairo | 18.8 ºC / 9.0 ºC | 34.4 ºC / 21.7 ºC | Mild winter days, cool nights; summer hot but less extreme than Luxor. |
| Luxor | 23.0 ºC / 5.4 ºC | 41.1 ºC / 23.6 ºC | Cruise and temples far more comfortable in the cooler half of the year; winter nights are cold. |
| Hurghada | 21.2 ºC / 10.3 ºC | 33.3 ºC / 26.0 ºC | Red Sea more moderate in summer; in winter the sea is cooler — check close to your dates. |
These figures come from WMO 1961–1990 normals held at NCEI. They are an old but official frame, not the forecast for your week. The Cairo / Luxor / coast contrast remains useful: Upper Egypt tightens with the heat, the Red Sea less so.
Nile cruise and a Red Sea stay
A typical cruise links Luxor and Aswan over a few days, with temple visits. Combining it with Hurghada or Sharm needs a domestic flight or a long transfer. With few nights, pick one axis. With ten or twelve, the sequence Cairo → Nile → sea is the most readable. In summer, favour the coast or accept dawn temple visits and air-conditioned afternoons.
Is Egypt safe to travel to?
There is no single, permanent answer. Check your own government's travel advice (for example the UK FCDO or the US State Department; Portuguese citizens can use the Portal das Comunidades). Several governments advise against all travel to specific areas (among others, North Sinai) and against all but essential travel to others. Classic Cairo, Nile and Red Sea resort itineraries usually sit outside those zones — but the notices change. Read the official pages before you pay, and read them again close to departure.
Planning example (not a package): from November to March, with ten nights, two in Cairo, four on the Nile and four in Hurghada. In July I would shift the weight to the coast and shorten Luxor, or leave the cruise for another year.
What should appear in the proposal

Frequently asked questions
What is the best time to visit Egypt?
For Cairo and the Nile, the cooler half of the year (broadly October to April). For a Red Sea beach only, summer is more tolerable, with heat on land.
Hurghada in December?
The air is usually mild by day and cool at night, according to the historical normals. The sea is cooler than in summer. Check the forecast and whether you want a heated pool.
Is it worth combining a Nile cruise and the Red Sea?
Yes, if you have enough nights and accept a domestic flight. In a short week, choose one of the two axes.
